  1. Dear Scribes,

One of the highlights of my summer so far has been the hike I took to the summit of Mt. San Jacinto, a lofty peak which stands over 10,800 feet above the Palm Springs desert.

My husband and I first rode the Palm Springs Aerial Tram up to about 8,300 feet above sea level. It was a thrilling ride, and we enjoyed watching the scenery change from dry desert to pine forest. It was also about 20 degrees cooler when we stepped off the tram!

After leaving the tram station, we took a half-mile walk to the ranger station where we had to sign in and receive a wilderness permit. That is so they know who is out on the hiking trails. At the end of the hike, we had to turn in another paper to show that we had arrived back down the mountain safely.

From the ranger station, we hiked about 5 1/2 miles to the peak. It was a difficult hike, especially with the 2,300 foot elevation gain. However, the views were spectacular, so it was well worth the effort!

After arriving back at the tram station, we had a lovely dinner to celebrate and reward ourselves for our hard work! We watched a stunning sunset and saw the glowing full moon afterward.

I am looking forward to hearing about your summer adventures!

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Ranney

  2. Dear Mrs. Ranney and Scribes,

I just got back from a trip with my family to Vail,Colorado. We met up with my parents good family friends, swam in our warm swimming pool, hiked to the tall peak of Vail mountain, and played at Adventure Ridge. While at Adventure Ridge, I was able to bungie jump as well as have a huge lunch after a three hours of hiking. After that, I went on a gondola down to the bottom of the mountain. The view from the gondola was amazing, and we saw deer walking up the mountain.

The last day of our trip, we drove up a dirt rode to a lake called Piney Lake. We saw a three year old wild moose eating and drinking water at the shore. We had to be careful because we were told that they can charge and kill a person if bothered.

We woke up the next day and drove 15 hours home in the car, but all in all I had a spectacular summer vacation.

    Sincerely,
    Benett
